Despite the competition he ran very well.”

We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “He did all the heavy lifting in this race pressing the 4-5 favorite all the way around. GiveTheMan a Cigar ran a strong second at Aqueduct on Wednesday getting run down by a credible horse deep in the stretch. GiveTheMan a Cigar sat within range during the initial half, quickened when let out a notch departing the backstretch, was three to four wide launching himself to the top during the run around the bend, felt the presence of the top one as six furlongs was being reached and got let out, saw the advantage slowly but steadily get cut down, came out slightly, but enough, after some left side pressure, leading the top twosome to bump lightly in the vicinity of the sixteenth marker, still put up some fight after having lost control a sixteenth or so earlier, but had to settle for the place.

We spoke with trainer Chris Englehart after the race and Chris said, ”He ran a very good race. He was 7 lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Depending on his number we might consider moving him back to Maiden Special Weight next time.”

We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “Quai Voltaire is a good horse. It doesn’t surprise me a lot that he was able to beast us today. Maybe a little, but not a lot. We can see that GiveTheMan a Cigar is getting the hang of what he’s supposed to do. He’s been knocking on the door and he’ll eventually get through. But once she got into stride she was moving well and ultimately finished by outworking her partner by a good margin. Based on her breeding and her speed out of the gate I suspect this filly is not going to be a sprinter. I see her more of a miler. Baby I'm Blue ran a very competitive 3rd on Thursday at Penn National. In an off-the turf scratched down field she broke in the air from post 4, stayed out from the rail while making the pace into early stretch then weakened.

We spoke with trainer Brandon Kulp after the race. Brandon said, “She needs to be on the lead and she was pressed a little bit going around tonight. She weakened up in the lane a little bit first time going long.”

We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “This confirms a suspicion that I've had for a while and that’s that this filly wants two turns. Her better races at Charles Town were going around two turns. She needs to be on the lead but she can’t keep up with the fast pace in a sprint. If she gets an easy lead in a two-turn race she’s much more competitive. Today she faced the toughest crew she’s seen since her days in New York and she held her own. She got nipped for 2nd by the 3-5 favorite and she was 17 lengths ahead of the 4th place horse. We’ll keep her going around two turns and try to get a turf try into her.”

Baby I'm Blue earned $2,200 for Thursday’s 3rd place finish.

Baby I'm Blue ran a strong 2nd on Friday at Charles Town. Breaking from the 5 post Baby I'm Blue was bumped by High End Gal shortly after the start then stalked the pace on the outside. She made a bid past the three-eighths pole, took the far turn in the three-path and assumed the lead at the three-sixteenths. She then dug in under moderate handling but was caught in the later yards and had to settle for second.

We spoke with trainer Brandon Kulp after the race. Brandon said, “She ran very well tonight. The distance might be just a bit too far for her. I only wish the rider had let her go as I instructed him to do.”

We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “This filly clearly has a liking for the Charles Town surface. She’s now got a win and a second in two career starts there. She’s a very one-dimensional horse that needs the lead to have any chance. I think the 7 furlong distance might just be a bit beyond her scope. It’s good to know we can run her there as an option. We’d like to try her on the grass to see if that moves her up any. Our plan is to try her in a turf race at Penn National and then evaluate the best strategy for a summer campaign.”

Baby I’m Blue earned $2,000 for Friday’s 2nd place finish.

Brandon will see how Baby I'm Blue comes out of the race and he’ll point her accordingly, possibly to a turf race at Penn National.
