Hibiscus Stables Vintage 2008 On Schedule and On Track

News from the Vintage 2008 group this week confirmed that all three horses are on track with training and target time-frames for possible debuts are coming quickly into focus.  Recaps of the updates include:

Forest Wildcat filly – Shipping to Southern California this week to resume training.  Currently on track for a potential debut in the coming months.  A Red Zone Alert was issued this week indicating less than 2 shares of this horse remain.

Good and Tough colt – Scheduled to arrive at Fair Hill with in the next few days where the next level of training will commence with Steve Klesaris.  All indications are that this athletic horse may be the first of Vintage 2008 to debut.

Yonaguska colt – Scheduled to ship to Fair Hill within the next couple of weeks where the next level of training will commence with Steve Klesaris.  This colt continues to impress.

Hibiscus Silks Shine on Food Network's "Throwdown with Bobby Flay"
Chantal Sutherland dons Hibiscus Colors as a Judge

Imagine our surprise when Kevin C., one of our astute partners, gave us the heads up that Chantal Sutherland wore a pair of our silks on a  popular Food Network Show. Last summer while in Saratoga, she was a judge on an episode of Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

I was able to talk with the two time Sovereign Award winner and model this week to find out how she came to wear them. She told me that she was allowed to pick them out herself for the show and of the 3,000 pairs in the Silk’s Room she chose ours because “they were the prettiest silks in the room”.

Sutherland judges the challenge between Flay and Hattie's fried chicken.

The concept of the show is that host, Bobby Flay, challenges local establishments that are well known for a certain dish to a cook-off.  His Saratoga challenge calls out Hattie's Restaurant, famous for more than 60 years for southern cooking and some of the best fried chicken anywhere.

The show will be re-aired on the Food Network in September:

Sep 17, 2008 9:00 PM ET/PT
Sep 17, 2008 12:00 AM ET/PT
Sep 20, 2008 4:00 PM ET/PT

With Saratoga Racetrack as a back drop, Sutherland judges "in-style" - but we won't give away the winner!

Hibiscus Stables Interviewed by Steve Byk at Saratoga Racetrack

Hibiscus Stables was featured on Steve Byk's radio show on Thoroughbred Racing Radio Network last week.  The show was broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio and featured Mike Oliveto discussing races, Hibiscus Stables and current offerings.

Mike had the opportunity to discuss the make-up of Hibiscus partnerships, some recent stories and a look forward to the promising new Vintage 2008.  Byk was impressed at the number of Hibiscus partners he's seen in Saratoga this year.  Mike's been invited back for another visit in September.

Hibiscus Stables Spotlight: The Lanza Family

If you’ve been a faithful reader of our newsletter-you may recall that back in April of this year, Hibiscus Stables donated “A Day At the Races”  to the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation annual gala. The highest bid went to Anthony Lanza of Mahopac, NY who also serves as the VP of the Westchester/Rockland Chapter.

We were fortunate to have them here with us in Saratoga and they were able to stay through Monday to see Salt Water Reign run in The Union Avenue Stakes.

The Lanza's in the paddock.
Anthony grew up in New Rochelle and had to drop out of high school to support his family when his father died at age 52.  He took the reins of the family business and has built and expanded it successfully over the years.  Anthony is only 44 and is planning to retire next year!  A true outdoorsman-he likes hunting (bow and arrow), fishing, snowmobiling and jet skiing. He’s got every season covered, not to mention a new boat.

He and Dawn (his high school sweetheart) have been married close to twenty years. She’s an avid horsewoman and rides hunter/jumpers at least 3 times a week. She rides Mouse a 4 year-old Thoroughbred and Jack an 11 year-old mix and loved seeing the horses at Saratoga work in the morning, as well as visiting Sextant in her stall.

Their son, Pat age 13 enjoys  paintball, riding his ATV and fishing.  We also call him “Mr. Lucky”-he was picking winners all day!   Samantha is 9 and plays soccer and rides horses with her Mom. She too was good at picking winners.

What  a delightful family to spend time with. We’re happy that we could show them a good time in Saratoga and we look forward to participating at next year’s gala.

And a special thanks to them for sharing some of their pictures of the day with us for this article!
